Getting ready for the holidays is always super stressful, and it’s not going to get any easier this year with a pandemic. That doesn’t mean holiday planning is impossible though. Here are a few ways you can have a safe, fun holiday season.
The first thing you’ll want to do is get your holiday shopping done early. There’s nothing worse than realizing you forgot to get a gift for your mother-in-law or neighbor last minute. Make a list of everyone you need to go shopping for, and check everyone off as quick as you can. You’ll feel better knowing you won’t need to run around the mall like a chicken with it’s head cut off on Christmas Eve.
Another good idea is to decide beforehand how many holiday events you’ll want to attend this year. This may be a difficult choice to make, but the last thing you want is to get covid-19, or even just the flu. If a family event involves traveling, take that into consideration before you decide to go. Will you have to fly, or can you drive instead? Do you have a few extra face masks to take on your trip? You may also want to find out how many people are expected to attend, and if social distancing will be encouraged. None of this is to discourage you from seeing loved ones, but to help you stay safe and healthy. With flu season coming up, it’s more important than ever to stay well. Ask your family and friends to help you stay healthy by social distancing and wearing face masks at gatherings. That way you can see everyone and be safe.
You’ll also want to send out holiday cards. With all the social distancing going on, you may not have had as many opportunities to see friends and family this past year. Finally, be sure to spend some time this holiday season practicing self-care. This past year has been hard on all of us, meaning we all need to take some time for ourselves. Go for a walk or a run, meditate, or spend a few minutes each day practicing gratitude. Spend time focusing on the present moment, instead of getting caught up in the past or future. If you get stressed out, remember to take a few deep, calming breaths. If you use one or two of these techniques throughout the upcoming holiday season, you’ll be much better off and less worried about things. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
