Postcard from Shelter Island

One of the best family vaction spots is just a stone’s throw from the city. Christine Gachot shows us around Shelter Island.

New York mom Christine Gachot has been going to her Long Island vacation house in Shelter Island ever since she began dating her now husband—17 years ago. “He took me there on our first official date and we have spent every summer since on Shelter Island,” she says. “Over the years we have added holidays to the tradition, and winters, and then it just became the weekly Friday commute. We try to get to our front porch every weekend.”

Gachot is the former vice president of design development at Andre Balazs Properties—where she spearheaded development and oversaw the design and construction of the Standard Hotel New York, Hotel QT, 40 Mercer Residences, One Kenmare Square, and William Beaver House. These days, she is one of the principals at Gachot—the design firm she runs with her husband, John. After a busy week, a trip to their family vacation spot on Shelter Island is an obvious choice. “May and September are quiet and beautiful. August there is a quintessential East Coast summer experience not to be missed,” she says.
