The Less-Stress Guide to Swimwear Shopping

Summer days are here again; the season of sun, sea, sand, and swimsuit shopping. For many, buying swimwear is one of the least fun aspects of preparing for the season (second only to getting stung by a jellyfish). Fortunately, there are ways to minimise the stress of swimsuit shopping, so let’s dive in.

Identify What You’re Looking For

While the sheer range of options available, shopping for a new swimsuit might feel somewhat overwhelming. A bit of choice can be a good thing, so long as you know your criteria. This can include things like cut and colour, but ideally comfort should come first.

For many, comfort equals coverage, so before you begin your search, ask what you are likely to feel most comfortable in. If you’re not in favour of more revealing cuts, modest swim dresses are perfect for poolside lounging, and depending on the local dress code, may even be preferable.

Know What’s Normal

A major issue with social media is that despite the apparent strides in body diversity, we still tend to see bodies and faces that look eerily similar to one another. Not only that, but years after it first appeared in print media, the old message of getting “beach body ready” reappears every single year.

From stressing about stretch marks to fretting over our tummy folds, few of us are immune to societal beauty standards (even famous models). Acknowledging this can go some way towards reducing the “spotlight effect” that tends to create self-consciousness, even about our own bodies.

Swimwear Style Tips

A classic style swimsuit in a neutral shade is always a solid option – but if you feel like getting a little more adventurous, there’s a number of ways to go about it. Similar to how you would add visual interest to an everyday outfit, check your garment for the following:

  • Texture: pieces with ruching, shirring, matte or shiny finishes are all great examples.
  • Pattern: Bold or abstract, small or large; prints and patterns are always popular.
  • Colours: From acid brights to soft pastels, find your shade and shift out of neutral.
  • Fabric: Swimwear shopping is one of the rare occasions where it pays to wear synthetic fabrics like polyester and spandex ( look for recycled options).

When it comes to the cut of your swimsuit, also  pay attention to the neckline as well as how high it is cut on the leg. Whether your style is vintage-inspired, sporty, minimal or glam, try a few on and see what style works for you.

In the Fitting Room

While some stores have soft lighting and a relaxing ambiance, sadly this is not everyone’s experience, as you will know if you’ve ever attempted to wrestle yourself into a one-piece under equally unforgiving lighting.

When trying on swimwear, underwear is a must- both for hygiene purposes and to avoid any distracting fabric peeking out of the sides. Secondly, remember it isn’t just you; fitting room mirrors are universally unflattering, and women’s clothing sizes are (still) notoriously inconsistent.

Finally, if you can’t find someone to join you in support, be extra kind to yourself, and focus on the fun you’ll have in your fabulous new swimsuit.
