A DIY Dry Scalp Shampoo to Get You Through the Cold Weather Months

After an unseasonably warm early fall, cooler temperatures are finally sweeping the country. And while we’re thrilled for sweater weather, and any excuse to wear ear muffs on a regular basis, we could do without the biting winds and drying indoor heat. Especially since that particular cold weather combo can lead to itchy, dry scalp.

Fortunately, there are a few DIY dry scalp shampoos, rinses, and treatments that can fix those flakes ASAP. Here are a few of our favorites:

DIY Moisturizing Shampoo:

Mix 1 cup liquid castile soap, 1/4 cup olive oil, and 1/8 cup honey together, and store in a glass bottle.

Sugar Scalp Scrub:

Put five tablespoons of brown sugar in a bowl and slowly add enough olive, coconut, or almond oil to make a paste. Rub the mixture on your scalp gently to remove any existing flakes, and to hydrate the scalp. Then shampoo and condition as ususal.

Hot Oil Treatment:
Moisturize your scalp with an easy-to-make hot oil treatment. Simply warm up three tablespoons of your favorite oil (we’re partial to coconut, but almond and olive would work as well) and massage into your scalp. Let sit for three hours, then rinse, shampoo and condition.

Tea Tree Oil:
If you think your flakes are being caused by dandruff instead of dry skin, add 5-10 drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo. This natural addition will help clear up your problem in just a few weeks.
