Summer can take its toll on your hair. Between the family trips to the pool, sweaty, ab-busting workouts, and a head full of product to combat frizz, your hair might be feeling more than a little weighed down. Fortunately, all you need to restore your locks to their pre-summer state is a good clarifying shampoo.
Drugstore shelves are stocked with formulas promising to strip away sweat, grease, and the residue other products leave behind, but why spend money when you can make your own clarifying shampoo at home? All you need are a few inexpensive, pantry staples for a product guaranteed to leave hair soft and shiny. Not to mention, this recipe won’t damage color-treated hair.
Wellness site MindBodyGreen recommends using a baking soda shampoo followed by a vinegar rise for optimal cleansing. Start by combining one part baking soda with three parts water. Work the mixture through your hair, and let sit for 3-5 minutes, longer if your hair is extra grimy. Then wash with warm water.
Follow it up with a vinegar rinse. Add one part apple cider vinegar to four parts water, then gently pour over your head. After a few seconds, rinse with cold water to seal in moisture and shine. Then, blow dry and style as normal.
