At nearly one million square feet, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the largest museums in the country and houses some of the world’s most notable collections of impressionist and post-impressionist art in its permanent collection. The Modern Wing, which opened in 2009, contains a world-renowned collection of 20th and 21st Century art, including Modern European painting and sculpture, photography, architecture and design, and contemporary art. Altogether, the Art Institute of Chicago’s collections encompass more than 5,000 years of expression from all areas of the world and approximately 300,000 total works of art.
