Aerin Lauder is a beauty scion (her grandmother was Estée Lauder), an influential trendsetter, a savvy businesswoman, and a mother of two boys. Recently, I spent the day with the mogul mama in celebration of her lifestyle brand AERIN. As we toured her new pop-up shop in Southampton, NY, I got an up-close look at her collection.
Aerin got it spot-on for busy moms who want to look effortlessly stylish in a minimal amount of time. The accessories are amazing (I particularly loved a batik purse that could double as an evening clutch or a makeup bag). But more than anything, her beauty products blew me away–no surprise there, given her family history. They are soft, natural and minimal. The rose-scented body creams are my favorite solution to a long day in the sun at the beach.
Equally as lovely as the AERIN collection was the woman herself. As I shopped and sampled her beautiful products, I also got the chance to talk with her about motherhood and raising boys. As a mother of two boys myself, we connected on the woes of breastfeeding, post baby-weight and dealing with the mess and clutter of kids.
I asked Aerin how she maintained her impeccable homes while raising two children. “I had a lot of Pottery Barn storage containers everywhere,” she said. Now that her children are older, she has relaxed her rules. When it comes to maintaining her gorgeous interiors, she told me: “You have to let it go,” she said. “As long as nobody gets hurt it’s all OK.”
She said that her boys are pretty good when it comes to keeping tidy and respecting the household. That didn’t surprise me at all. I took a snapshot of a “messy” desk in Aerin’s home–it was the most gorgeous pile of clutter I’ve ever seen.
