A DIY Breakfast Buffet for Extra Special Christmas Morning Cheer

We’re guessing that the last thing you’ll be in the mood to do on Christmas morning is whip up a big breakfast for everyone. Chances are, however, you will be hungry. (Lugging the kids’ gifts up the basement stairs had you working up an appetite, and your kids, well, they’re always looking for something to eat.) Plus, it’s not every day that your family gets to sit down to enjoy the first meal of the day together. So doing something nice without a ton of fussing is your aim here.

One of my favorite parts about staying in hotels is the guaranteed DIY breakfast buffet that beckons in the morning. My first stop is usually the Belgian waffle guy. Once I’ve got the piping hot raised buttermilk disc on my plate, I proceed to the toppings, opting for raspberries, plenty of whipped cream, and several drizzles of golden honey. My dad always beelines to the omelet station where he goes heavy on the bacon and mushrooms.

This Christmas, recreate a fancy brunch spread in your own kitchen. I’m not suggesting that you or your spouse take omelet orders, but a breakfast burrito corner, now, that’s a swell idea. Take your family’s Taco Tuesdays and brunch-ify it with eggs. Don’t forget the Bloody Mary fixin’s (or, if you’re like me, the Bloody Maria makings–sub tequila for vodka). Round out the meal with fresh fruit, and you’ve got yourself a delightful holiday buffet.
