The original Jewish Museum in Berlin opened just before WWII and was promptly shut down by the Nazis. Years later, the city government held a design contest for the “Jewish Department” to be added to the Berlin museum. Architect Daniel Libeskind won with his radical zig-zag structure, which opened to the public in the fall of 2001. Its permanent and changing exhibits cover the Holocaust, but also the millennia of German-Jewish history that preceded it, as well as more contemporary events and people.
