Earlier this week, we featured Newbery Honor Book Show Way as one of the 10 best children’s books to celebrate black history. The book describes the story of slaves who used quilts as maps to freedom. Each patch held a secret meaning to help them on their journey north. The heroine of the book, Mathis, made quilts to show where start, how to find the North Star, and which direction to take at crossways. (Hence the name “show way” quilt.) In this arts and crafts project for kids, children will make their own quilts out of paper. Working in groups of four, each team will decide where they want to go and what symbols to use on each patch. Instructions are in the slideshow. Think of it as art for kids with lessons from Black History Month to boot.
