MY STYLE: Feminine chic with an edge. In other words, I like to wear clothes that are pretty and comfortable, but I mix it up by adding urban or boho chic pieces. Some of my favorite brands are Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant, Hanii Y, J. Crew, and Fiorentini + Baker. At home, I like to be surrounded by lots of natural light and keep the look clean, fresh, and airy, but also functional. I mix an elegant Grecian color spectrum with lots of white and splashes of blue, with rustic antiques and modern pieces. I like my home to feel lived in and my favorite piece is our long wooden farm table. The kids can spill all over it because the more stains the better it looks!

I LOVE NEW YORK BECAUSE: The energy and diversity. My children are exposed to so many different experiences, cultures, and lifestyles everyday. The possibilities are endless and every day is an adventure.

Yura on Madison

Proprietor and chef Yura Mohr opened this niché café on the Upper East Side to cater to businesspeople and busy moms on the go. The menu offers a refreshing selection of quick bites from sandwiches to salads and conveniently boxed lunches, which can be enjoyed leisurely in the cool, tiled interiors of the café, or in Central Park on your lunch break. Yura is not the place for heavy red meats; instead, expect crisp vegetables in a classic Greek salad, punchy spinach and orange salad, sandwiches like salmon and cream cheese, and artfully created eggplant pinwheels. There’re also lovely hors d’oeuvres, from fun cheddar jalapeño poppers to more sophisticated nibbles, like blackened salmon brochettes with chive. Stephanie Nelson relies on Yura for dinner for her family on those nights when, “it’s just too crazy to cook!”

The Craft Studio

The Craft Studio has been a place of wonder, excitement, and (most importantly) magic for New York City kids ever since founder Barbara Dansker opened its doors over a decade ago. Stephanie Nelson finds it hard even to walk by with her kids without them wanting to go in! The warm and inviting studio promises to allow a child’s imagination run wild (under the supervision of the energetic and organized staff). Activities include workshops, daily arts and crafts sessions, and a toyshop stocked full of goodies to get the creative juices flowing. They also offer unique birthday party packages, with a choice of 18 different themes such as Fairy Princess and Knight, Puppet Friends, Super Hero, and Secret Rock Star. So if you have a budding Botticelli or whimsical Whistler on your hands, take a peek inside The Craft Studio; chances are your little artist will never want to leave.

The Corner Bookstore

Every great book has a great story, so does every great bookstore. The Corner Bookstore, located in the affluent Carnegie Hill area, opened its doors in 1978. Located in a building dating back to the 1890s, with interior fixtures from the 1920s this building was renovated from the inside out to restore it to its former beauty. The dedicated staff contribute extra charm. With hand-picked books for everyone from your tiniest tot to your rambunctious pre-teen, a playful nook for children to sit and read in, and even a special store charge account just for kids, your child’s inner bookworm will be well nourished. And if your child’s also a cat-lover, then he or she will be thrilled to meet The Corner Bookstore’s most important employee, Hampton, the best read feline around!

The High Line

Set on repurposed freight train tracks, the High Line rises high above the city streets, boasting sweeping views of the skyline and the Hudson River. “I lived in Chelsea while this public park was being built, and it is a very special part of New York to me,” says Kelsey Banfield. “Sometimes it’s peaceful and meditative, other times it’s alive with people and bursting with energy. Just like New York itself.” Best of all, the verdant paths (there are also themed tours for botany enthusiasts) are dotted with seating areas, and will lead you to coffee shops and gelato stands galore.

Hotel Wales

Stepping into the hotel is like entering a unique universe, where turn of the century grandeur meets the sophistication of modern interior design. You need not even set foot outside the hotel for excellent Italian food at Paolo’s, or, if you’re looking to detox, grab a refreshing juice or healthy vegan food from Juicy Naam. Stephanie Nelson’s and Molly Fienning’s brunch spot is the hotel’s own Sarabeth’s restaurant of lemon ricotta pancake fame.
